Working Together to Optimize Crusher Performance

Earlier this month, Excel partnered with Midsouth Machine (our dealer) to successfully assemble and install a 7FT Symons® Standard Crusher at a southeastern US quarry. This collaborative project involved multiple teams with extensive organization from both Excel and Midsouth and clearly emphasized our tagline of ‘Working Together. Optimizing Performance,’ as well as our mission to ‘WOW our customers…in everything that we do.’

Initially, the crusher’s main frame needed replaced; however, after Regional Sales Director (Jim Ulrich) asked Excel’s Technical Support Manager (Joe Opel) to travel to the quarry and inspect the current condition, he verified that additional components were necessary for the 7FT Symons to achieve optimal performance. The existing crusher was removed over Labor Day weekend; the construction outfit responsible also prepped the crusher base for grout and repaired areas where erosion occurred in the existing concrete, prior to the new main frame being set. They also rebuilt the crusher’s discharge box. Joe traveled onsite for the installation, along with Crushing Products Sr. Engineer (Paul Prohaska).

Assembly of the Symons crusher included a new: adjustment ring, eccentric assembly, socket assembly, countershaft box, feed plate assembly and hydraulic power unit (HPU). Excel was able to keep the existing bowl, head, main shaft and transfer some of the original tramp release cylinders from the existing main frame. Most of these components needed cleaned up because they featured rough spots and excessive material build-up; however, with a little ‘elbow grease’ by buffing with an emery cloth and grinder, the parts were restored. Even though team members were fighting off the remnants of Tropical Storm Ernesto throughout the installation, quarry maintenance staff made their final adjustments to the crusher and it was officially broke in.

The Project Engineer recently contacted Excel to say that “the crusher is running well” and that they plan to do future business with us and Midsouth. Joe Opel states, “This was a team effort from start to finish that included: engineering, manufacturing, customer support, inspection, assembly, finishing and shipping. It took everybody working together to make it happen. Could not have asked for a better group to work with on this project.”
