A Popular Tour Destination

We have been busy hosting tours with various groups in the Greater Peoria region the last couple of months! Most recently, 20 participants from the (Peoria) Mayor’s Summer Youth Corps visited Excel and were impressed by the Excel culture. Peoria Mayor, Jim Ardis, launched the program in 2009 as a “summer alley cleanup program,” where high school students would receive paid employment for their services. In 2015, Peoria Public Works extended the program to many needed projects within the City of Peoria, as well as providing an educational engagement in potential careers.

Sixteen members from the Tazewell County Farm Bureau’s Primetimers group visited in early June. The Primetimers are a group of individuals aged 55 and over who are primarily retired. There are over 100 members who annually sign up for a mixture of activities that not only provide social interaction, but also opportunities for continuing education. According to Coordinator Phyllis Fischer, “many of our members had no familiarity with Excel and were simply amazed at the global magnitude at which the company operates.” The Primetimers received a firsthand look at how parts are manufactured, and gained insight into the markets which Excel serves.

In May, the Career Exploration Class from Havana High School toured Excel. This class is part of the Career Link program and the objective is to offer high school juniors and seniors one hour of classroom credit that will help them to map a career path. Debbie Yetter, Career Exploration Educator, commented, “Excel always offers an excellent presentation on workplace skills and employer expectations. Many of my students will not attend a 4-year university but instead choose certificate/diploma careers.”

Steve Stewart, Excel’s Director of Human Resources, states, “These types of tours are beneficial to Excel because they allow us the opportunity to demonstrate what manufacturing is; how much is truly driven by art and design, by exhibiting the process from idea to production. Peoria is one of the central hubs of manufacturing in Illinois, and most of these visitors are unaware of manufacturers like Excel.”
