Time in Inspection Gives New Machinists a ‘Jump Start’

Excel’s F3 Guarantee promises our customers that their parts will receive the perfect Fit, Form and Function and precision machining is integral to our process. The first few weeks of a newly hired machinist’s employment is spent in Final Inspection rather than in the Machine Shop. Why? This training allows them to experience and understand the importance of quality from day one.

Machine Shop Manager, Jeff Kleiber, and Final Inspection Team Leader, Lanny Rhoades, have been working together to ensure the success of this recently added training pathway. They believe this positive approach introduces our new machinists to the demands and expectations of the inspection process, and use of measuring tools (calipers and micrometers) in an efficient manner. They also learn how to read prints to ensure dimensional accuracy and understand revision levels. Jeff says “This is a huge benefit because it helps prepare machine operators for their job duties. It also provides insight into all aspects of WHAT is expected when a part is delivered to them for final inspection and HOW they gather the information needed.”

Final Inspection Technician, Josh Null, has worked with many of our new machinists since this training program was implemented. He is a proponent for the training and knows the time that new machinists spend in Final Inspection gives them a ‘good jump’ before they start running a machine at Excel. He feels the most important part of the training is that machinists understand the importance of 100% traceability to each part. He comments,” This allows them to see that we work hard, communicate, and collaborate with other departments to ensure Excel’s parts pass inspection and are shipped to the customer.

The goal is for our new machinists to be at ease when they start producing parts after their training. Starting in Final Inspection helps them build confidence in their abilities as they check measurements, and learn how temperature affects the components.
