In mid August, Design Engineer, Phil Hopping, traveled to Norcross, Georgia, to install an Excel Sentinel System for Vulcan. Headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, Vulcan is the nation’s largest producer of construction materials (primarily crushed stone, sand and gravel) and a major producer of aggregate-based construction materials, including asphalt and ready-mixed concrete.

In July, Jim Ulrich, Regional Sales Director, received notification from NorX, one of Excel’s distributors, that Vulcan would like to perform the installation of the Sentinel Advanced Hydraulic System to their 7FT Symons® mainframe, at their shop in Norcross, Georgia. The Excel team successfully converted the 7FT Symons machine and the installation went smoothly and was successful.

Vulcan Norcross was definitely WOW’d by our first-class customer service. The installation went perfectly and Jim said, “Scott Wood, General Manager of Vulcan’s Norcross Shop, stated more than once that he really liked the simplicity of both the installation and the operation of our system. It was one of the main reasons Vulcan purchased our system, and he added that we have only heard positive comments from everyone there.” According to Phil, NorX Representative, Jason Russell, notified him that two guests from another mine saw the system in action, and they were “impressed.”

The Sentinel System is an advanced hydraulic crusher clearing and tramp release system, developed for spring-loaded Symons® cone crushers, which greatly improves safety and reduces downtime for cavity clearing. Hydraulic ram adjustment and motorized gear adjustment options are available for remote bowl adjustment turning kits. Both allow for quick changes to the closed-side setting and simplify liner changes. According Lawrence Wood, original developer of our system and former long-time Excel employee, “The evolution of this system has undergone a series of collaborative changes, since its initial product development in 2000. However, customer reaction of today’s version has been nothing but positive. Rock crushing is a tough job (a dirty job) and this product has proven to be both workable and durable!” Excel has sold and installed Sentinel systems worldwide. The system is available for 7FT, 5-1/2FT, and 4-1/4FT Symons Crushers with all configurations of internal and external pin arrangements. To learn more about Excel’s Sentinel System, click here.
